Eat of the Week: Cafe Louie's rich and bright spinach-ricotta ravioli

The East End restaurant is popular for brunch and breakfast pastries, but the dinner menu is just as great.

Every Friday, Chron's food team shares a standout dish from their experiences dining out during the week. Follow along to see why we love these Houston eats.

The eat: Cafe Louie's spinach and ricotta tortelli ($20)

Cafe Louie made a big splash when it opened in the East End in May, becoming the hottest ticket in Houston for breakfast and brunch, attracting long lines and wait times for a table. The trendy restaurant garnered so much attention for its morning delicacies that diners may not realize Cafe Louie launched dinner service a few months ago.

Over the weekend, I finally dropped in to check out the new menu. My two friends and I ordered 10 dishes, all shareable plates meant to be enjoyed family-style—you know the spiel. There was not a bad dish on the table, but a few stood out as particularly excellent. I didn't think I'd ever get excited about spinach-ricotta ravioli, but Cafe Louie's rendition knocked it out of the park with the simplest flavors and perfectly cooked pasta. The stuffed tortelli has rich ingredients in the ricotta, Parmigiano Reggiano and nutmeg, but a surprising tang in the sauce brightened the dish, making it at once satisfying and mouthwatering.

What else?

Cafe Louie has an adjacent, teeny retail store called Little Red Box Grocery, which sells produce, meat and pantry staples. The shop accepts SNAP and EBT, with an added 50 percent off produce purchased with them. And if you're visiting in the morning, make sure to stop by the counter for Cafe Louie's delicious pastries and coffee drinks.
